POSTGRADUATE
It
is debatable whether an 18-month course (as is common in India) is
sufficient for an MTech or MEng; two years might be better. Postgraduate
courses at IIT Kharagpur do teach slightly more advanced topics such as
structural dynamics. This is still a fundamental science. At
institutions such as Imperial College,
London, the University of
Graz,
Austria, or Delft
University of Technology in the Netherlands, specialised
subjects such as bridge engineering, offshore structures or tunnelling
technology are taught. Subjects such as these, which have direct
relevance to the industry, should be introduced in India too. A PhD is not strictly necessary for professional work, but there are subjects where the boundary between a Master’s and a PhD is blurred. For Finite Element Method (FEM) related jobs a PhD may be useful. |
